The Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR) mourns the loss of Jenny, a passionate advocate for refugee and migrant rights, and a treasured member of our community. As Vice President of CCR, Jenny dedicated her life to the pursuit of justice, compassion, and the empowerment of individuals facing immigration challenges and displacement. Her untimely departure leaves an irreplaceable gap in the lives of those who had the honor of knowing and collaborating with her.
Jenny’s commitment to human rights was unmatched. She was instrumental in advocating for the dignity and fair treatment of refugees, ensuring their voices were not only heard but prioritized in policy discussions and government meetings. Known for her gentle demeanor paired with unwavering resolve, she served as a guiding light for countless individuals seeking refuge and justice in Canada. Her dedication extended beyond mere advocacy; she personally supported those in need, providing steadfast encouragement and assistance.
For over twenty years, Jenny was an integral part of CCR, holding various roles including Vice President and Co-Chair of the Inland Protection Working Group. Her influence was far-reaching, particularly during her impactful tenure at Action Réfugiés Montréal, where she coordinated the Detention Program. In this role, she visited detainees at the Laval Immigration Holding Centre, tirelessly advocating for their rights. Additionally, she pioneered initiatives like the ARM pairing program and the men’s support group, showcasing her comprehensive approach to community care.
Jenny’s expertise and unwavering dedication earned her immense respect within the field of immigration advocacy. She was a trusted resource for the media, a compelling voice during parliamentary hearings, and a sought-after speaker at public forums and universities. Her mentorship profoundly impacted many interns and students, shaping the next generation of human rights defenders.
Above all, Jenny was a cherished friend and colleague, recognized for her kindness, integrity, and steadfast belief in a better world. She championed refugee leadership within CCR, always ensuring that individuals with lived experiences were at the forefront of discussions and decision-making processes. Her leadership style was characterized by humility; she never sought the spotlight but was always the first to step up and contribute essential work behind the scenes.
The loss of Jenny is immeasurable, not only for CCR but for the broader human rights community in Canada. Her legacy will endure through the countless lives she touched, the policies she helped shape, and the movement she so passionately strengthened. She leaves behind a grieving yet grateful community, inspired to carry on the work she fervently championed.
Jenny is survived by her loving husband Colm, her daughters Orla and Olivia, and her beloved dog Dusty. The CCR family extends heartfelt condolences to them and to all who cherished Jenny.
